Don’t Take My Advice…

How often do you take the advice of experts?

I’ve been asking random people this question and have been greeted with similar reactions — a little giggle, and a glancing away in embarrassment. It seems that many of us are in the business of ignoring the experts and going gung-ho, willy-nilly in the direction we wanted to go in the first place.

A few years ago I noticed that I was frequently seeking the advice of experts — often paying handsomely for it — and then failing to take their advice.

It seemed a little crazy to me. So I decided to do something about it.

Now, I take the advice of the experts I seek just to see what happens. I have to say, my results have been far better than I expected.

It’s been a challenge to set aside my attitude of, “I know better.”

I used to use excuses like, “My intuition is telling me otherwise,” or “Maybe that works for them, but I’m different because (enter lame reason here.)”

I’m not suggesting that we blindly follow everything we’re told. Without question, there are a lot of quacks out there in every industry.

But when someone has proven themselves to be talented and to have achieved similar results to those we seek…it seems a little crazy not to try their approach.

Yes, it might mean we have to change (eegads!) Yes, it might mean we will feel uncomfortable (ick!)

But it also might mean we succeed!

Whose advice will you follow this week?
