The Trouble with Hamster Goals

Ever find yourself chasing a goal for so long that you haven’t noticed you’re not making any progress?

Maybe it’s losing ten pounds.  Or beating your sales quota.  Or saving for a trip to Hawaii.

Whatever it is, it’s just not happening…for one reason or another.

You’re a little like the proverbial hamster – running and running in the wheel but never getting anywhere.

So what do you do when this happens?

I think you better, at a minimum, do something different than you’ve been doing all along.

At a maximum (and probably more often that you’d like to think)  you might want to consider dropping the goal altogether.

Permanently.  As in forever.

Because if it was a truly inspired goal, you probably wouldn’t need motivation.

What do you think?

  1. Do something different – absolutely! Keep trying until something works.

Given how slowly the ship turns, or it takes to get noticed in this crazy world we live in – I would say be careful you don’t give up too soon. One of the reasons for small businesses shutting their doors is that they didn’t stick with it until the gained the momentum they needed to be a success.

Individual goals may be different (like losing the 10 lbs. I’ve been wanting to lose for 30 years LOL). Why stress over it – it just makes you miserable.

  2. Hi Georgia -
Yep! It’s important to figure out when persistence is called for and when you’re “running on the wheel.”
